The gentlemen of Non-Divine (who used to be in the artificial limb business) bring with My Obsession a well a well-considered concept album. My Obsession tells the story of five mentally ill persons from whom the profile can be found inside the beautifully designed CD-booklet (with beautiful pictures of
old mental asylums). The profile short and objectively says what is wrong with that person, and the song tells the story from the patient’s side of view. And it should be clear these persons are sick; cutting up your face with some cutting equipment or fancying yourself a dictator isn’t quite what
you would call ordinary. The well-thought-through lyrics are based by solid metal by which especially
the multiple layers attract attention. A very positive leading part is reserved for the guitars, which roar nicely on one half, but produce the fattest licks on the other half. The grunt is from a high level, but a little bit too average for me, where it could have been (especially with this theme in mind) a bit sicker. Concept records don’t always work out well, but Non-Divine knows how to
handle such thing and hit the bulls-eye with My Obsession and mainly because they used the music as the starting point. Besides that the anticipation starts when you go through the CD-booklet and that is surely important.
