Ever since the Easter concerts of this year I’ve been impressed by this band. That’s why I was really eager to review this CD. Although the biography states that the band was formed in 1999, these guys have been a part of the music scene in Arnhem for quite some time now. The concept of
this CD is nicely found; it’s about a lunatic asylum, and in every song one of the inhabitants comes forward to tell his or her insane story. The booklet also shows attributes from psychiatric hospitals.
The band itself call their music “groovy metal”, and although I can see their point with this term, I can also see influences of stoner rock and doom metal. This produces a considerable dose of variation, which does good things for the band. The songs are, without exemption, tightly put together, and because of the good construction and the many dynamics, there is enough
tension in them. You need to familiarize yourself with the psycho vocals of Ivor van Beek at first, but it fits fine with the music and it gives Non-divine a face of their own. Musically speaking the band rumbles on nicely and technically speaking they also know their business. So what’s wrong with this promo? Suspiciously little, or it has to be that you need to listen to it a couple of times to appreciate the true Non-divine. But when you know that......... If these guys would just keep on developing, get booked often and get a contract-offer I see a sunny future ahead of them.
