Non-Divine – Asylum 45 (Rusty Cage) (CD)
Every once so often there are bands that make themselves heard pretty decently before their debut comes out. Non-Divine is a band like that. After the band was formed in 2001 they played in many important venues, in both the Netherlands and in Belgium, and won the Metal Bash in 2005. This of course raises the expectations for their debut, something that can be quite difficult for a band. In Non-Divine’s case they thankfully live up to the expectations completely, because the record is solid as a rock!
It’s a cliché, but you could label Non-Divine as ‘so good it doesn’t sound Dutch’. While this is a wrong term, considering the large number of talented bands that operate on national soil. Anyway, back to the music, which is, like said before, damned good. The groovy metal with a good shot of rock and strong melodies easily convinces and even sticks after the first time you’ve listened to it.
But also after multiple listening sessions the music is still diverse and layered enough to remain interesting. The raw vocals of Ivor van Beek sometimes remind me of the deceased Belgian band Channel Zero, while he resembles Fear Factory's Burton C. Bell on other, cleaner parts. There are also no faults in the production, but that’s almost logical when you know it was in the hands of super hip Danish producer Jacob Hansen. In a word, with ‘Asylum 45’ these men have a very good trump card, which many a band could be jealous of. If Non-Divine stay on this course, we will shortly have a new name to add to the list of biggest Dutch metal bands.
